It has been a regional division of Safeway Inc. since 2001. Genuardi owned a farm near Norristown, Pennsylvania and grew fruits and vegetables. Gaspare had a strong sense of customer service which is the cornerstone of Genuardi's. Genuardi's Supermarkets became the largest, most respected, and independent supermarket in the Philadelphia region. Genuardi's logo is "Difference is our Family Pride".
Genuardi's has many stores in the Philadelphia suburbs, including New Jersey. In December of 2000, Genuardi Family had sold the company to Safeway Inc., a Fortune 50 company, which operates more than 1,700 stores across the United States and Canada. It is one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America based on sales. Its stock is traded on the New York stock exchange under the symbol SWY. Today, being as a division of Safeway, Genuardi's continues to operate on the same basic principles that have been the foundation of the company : quality products, freshness, great value, and legendary customer service. Under Safeway's ownership, Genuardi's remains committed to providing a pleasant shopping experience for all customers. More than 6,500 team members operate 40 Genuardi's Stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.
They have also supported the local communities throughout their marketing areas. Since the program's inception, Genuardi's donated more than $24 million to more than 3,000 non-profit organizations. The funds have helped to support the good deeds of numerous groups such as schools, churches, synagogues, libraries, scout troops and fire companies. Genuardi's earned many awards, including the prestigious Pennsylvania Family Business of the Year Award, presented by The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
The company operated 33 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, and the Genuardi family was still closely involved in the company's operations. Genuardi's planned to open five additional stores in the year 2000. Genuardi's Markets was recognized as Pennsylvania's 'Family Business of the Year' by the Wharton School of Business and the Pennsylvania Small Business Association in 1999, when it also received a 'Salute to Excellence' from the Private Label Manufacturers Association for its private brand product line.
The company also stepped up efforts to inform its customers about food content through more thorough labeling. They believe consumers have the basic right to know releted information that will affect their personal food choices. They also recognize the significance of individual food preferences, and therefore, they want to guarantee choices for their customers to the best of our ability. Genuardi's had begun selling organic food in the early 1990s. In 1998 Genuardi's was awarded the 'Big O' award by the Organic Trade Association for excellence in promoting organic foods.
